Watercolor Journey – Expressive watercolor techniques for beginners and more experienced artists
Take Yourself on a Picturesque Watercolor Journey
Connect the dots between techniques and expression!
Watercolor Journey is a 3-month online art class from July 1st to September 30, 2018, with an interactive community called Bloom and Fly. We will create energizing sceneries that reveal watercolor’s potential. Whether you want to become a watercolor artist or explore yourself by filling a small watercolor journal, come to this picturesque Watercolor Journey!
This class is especially for you who admires traditional watercolor paintings but who wants to be more loose and contemporary in your approach. If you find sketching, perspective painting, careful shadowing and copying boring, but want to learn tips and tricks to let watercolors do half the work for you, you don’t want to miss this class!
1) Escape – Find a resort from your imagination by playing with layered techniques!
In July, we are playing with a variety of watercolor techniques like masking, spattering, washes, etc.
You can find tools and supplies from your household items and make some yourself.
We will paint fascinating imaginary scenes where you apply abstract elements as well.
2) Revisit – Translate memories to visual keepsakes by re-living walks and travels!
In August, we are pulling out ideas from photos and stories.
You can gather ideas from walks and travels or use your favorite Pinterest boards to dream about places you would like to go.
We will create loose landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and interiors that connect you with the time and the place.
3) Mix & Match – Go to a mixed media adventure with watercolors!
In September, we are bringing in the rest of your art supply arsenal.
You can use colored pencils, acrylic paints, inks, pens, collage pieces – whatever works on watercolor paper!
We will mix and match watercolor techniques with other media so that your watercolor journey will become even more adventurous.
Your Mentor – Paivi Eerola’s Journey to Expressive Painting Techniques
I am a full-time fine artist from Finland. A long time before I became a working artist, I bought some watercolor books to get enthusiastic about watercolors. I loved the simplistic idea of mixing color and water and expected to see miracles happen on paper. But I was too impatient to follow a sketch or a photo to a detail.
It took a long time for me to realize that the traditional teaching methods didn’t inspire me to pick the brush. I needed to find ways to boost imagination right from the beginning. With that, I have re-invented many visual principles so that I can remember them more easily. For example, instead of over-analyzing the direction of light, I add shadows like they would be strips of tape that connect the layers.
The more I have painted, the more I have re-written what depth means in practice, how to build a scene that shows wind, warmth, the emotional connection – all the non-visual stuff that books and videos rarely talk about, but that is essential to deliver the experience. Now I feel that I am ready to be your guide on this journey, helping you to connect the dots between watercolor techniques and creative expression.

Community and Weekly Feedback – You Are Not Alone!
For the duration of the class, you will get access to Bloom and Fly Facebook group where you can interact with other members, share your work, and get access to weekly feedback. Every Tuesday, you have the opportunity to get in-depth feedback from Paivi on your art project. Your project can be created from the class, freely from your ideas, from any of Paivi’s other art classes, or from anyone else’s art classes. You can ask feedback on the work that is already finished, or ideas for the work that you have just started. Your projects can be made from any supplies as long as it’s visual art. The feedback includes written or visually presented suggestions. The more active you are along the weeks, the more in-depth feedback you will get as Paivi gets to know you.
I have only taken two courses, but I feel I have changed by becoming more focused, by discovering that I do not have to give in to the fear of failure, and that no matter my skill level, this community is welcoming, mentoring, and loving. You, Paivi, lead us gently and with such kindness, and I am so grateful to have found this artful, magical place you have created. – Catherine Cale, USA
