Watercolors, Gouache, Acrylic Paints – Use what you love and have!

You can use any leftover paints for the projects as long as you have opaque white paint too. If you only have watercolors, buy a white gouache tube to go with them.

You also need a few brushes, especially a small one for details. You can use a variety of papers, from sketching paper to watercolor and mixed media papers. The directions are for paints, but you can also use pens. All in all, Decodashery is a class where you can dig into your stash!

From the Class Creator, Artist Paivi Eerola

Decodashery explores the decorative side of art. When making it, I have been inspired by Jane Austen movies, old jazz clubs, Russian handpainted floral plates, and skillful crocheters and cake makers around the world. What started as a simple idea to paint a little rose to my box of joy – the box of handmade collage pieces – eventually revealed the whole world of Decodashery, where limitations lead to liberation.

Artist Paivi Eerola and her online art class Decodashery

When I dove deeper into the forms of art that are not always appreciated as much as others, I discovered this fun route – starting with the ordinary can gradually lead to extraordinary. After all, nobody is ordinary, and all art has the possibility to become extraordinary.

Is Decodashery for beginners?
Yes! If you are over 18, and have tried to hold a brush before, welcome!

Is Decodashery for serious painters?
If the seriousness means that cakes can’t turn to hats, then this might not be your class. But if you want your art to get more imaginative and improve painting skills, including the quality of brushwork, welcome!

I want to find my voice / express myself / loosen up – is Decodashery for me?
Decodashery is not a regular self-exploring class where you begin by splashing paint or by mark-making. Instead, we honor the tradition of decorative arts and start with a set theme and sharp strokes. But once the class progresses and the variety of skills and subjects grows, the magic of Decodashery is revealed. This class challenges your imagination and questions what borders you are willing to break. At best, it positively changes how you see yourself.
