Create the Magical Forest with Four Artist’s Mindsets!

Jan 1st – Lesson 1 – Hope
Shy Little Fairies in Flowery Woods

Create easy looseness and let go of strict outlines! We will draw glimpses of fairies: partial faces, shoulders, wings, etc. Imagination will fill the rest of the figure.

This lesson is also about light and hope. We will paint magically lit nature sceneries with shy fairies and bold flowers that are like colorful trees. You will learn how to paint sparkles, sunbeams, and flooding light.

Magical Forest - Lesson 2 – Spirituality- Enchanted Angels in Leaf Chapels. Take your mark-making to the next level by creating irregular and layered patterns! In this lesson, we will dive deeper into nature’s visual language.

Feb 1st – Lesson 2 – Spirituality
Enchanted Angels in Leaf Chapels

Take your mark-making to the next level by creating irregular and layered patterns! In this lesson, we will dive deeper into nature’s visual language.

We will also move from marks to motifs, from single motifs to clustered designs, and paint decorative clothes on angelic figures. This lesson is about connecting nature and spirituality.

Water Nymphs in Shallow Ponds. Lesson 3 of Magical Forest, an online watercolor art class by Paivi Eerola of Peony and Parakeet.

March 1st – Lesson 3 – Flow
Water Nymphs in Shallow Ponds

Learn how to paint water by making abstract shapes! We will entice nymphs to emerge as naturally as possible from spots, lines, splotches, and rectangles. Sometimes art is more about seeing than creating!

In this lesson, we will calm down and get refreshed through art-making. We will feel the safety of shallow waters while exploring the flow of abstract shapes.

Adventurous Elves on Hills and Valleys. Lesson 4 of Magical Forest, an online watercolor art class by Paivi Eerola of Peony and Parakeet.

April 1st – Lesson 4 – Curiosity
Adventurous Elves on Hills and Valleys

Let’s go on an adventure to uncharted hills and valleys! We will paint the rougher side of nature’s magic – moss, stones, clouds, wind, and fallen trees.

We will also create fantasy elves – fearless adventurers who are ready to see the unseen and know the unknown! In this lesson, we let go of worries about wrongdoing and embrace what feels natural in all its roughness.

Bonus: Membership for Art Community Bloom and Fly!

With the class, you will also get a membership for Bloom and Fly Facebook Group where you can share your work and have conversations with fellow artists. The membership is for 2020, so you can create and share your magic for the rest of the year.

Supplies – Pencil, Paper, and Watercolors!

At the minimum, you will need a pencil, paper, watercolors, and a few brushes. An eraser, a spraying bottle, a painting board, and an art journal or a sketchbook can also be useful. You will get more information about the supplies once you sign up.

Expressing Light is a Starting Point for the Imagination

Magical Forest isn’t about mastering super realistic expression but using reality and light as a starting point for the imagination. You will move from what you see to what can be seen. First, it can be just omitting some lines that you usually draw, but when the amount of these small changes grows, the magic will be revealed. This class is about visual exploration!

We’ll use the same mindset in our Bloom and Fly community: you don’t have to have a big masterpiece to share it. You can start sharing small hand-drawn pieces and thoughts, and when your classmates do the same, the stream of exploration becomes energizing and inspiring.
